South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Sunday, May 27, said North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un has reaffirmed his commitment to "complete" denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula and also the meeting with US President Donald Trump, Reuters reported.

The meeting was called off by Trump recently in the face of North Korea's "tremendous anger and open hostility".

Trump also hinted in Washington that preparations for the summit with Kim were under progress. The meeting is scheduled to be held in Singapore on June 12.

Moon and Kim had a surprise meeting, their second in a month, at the same Punmunjeom border village on Saturday, May 25, to work towards reinstating the scuttled meeting.

Moon said in a news conference in Seoul that he and Kim had agreed during their surprise meeting that a possible North Korea-US summit must be held successfully, the Reuters report added.

The two leaders had come up with a joint declaration after their historic April 27 summit pledging their commitment to end the Korean War which is technically on and also denuclearise the Korean Peninsula.

Pyongyang thereafter was upset with the Americans issuing harsh words on its denuclearisation and also leading an air combat drill in the Korean Peninsula and pulled out of an official-level meeting with Seoul on May 16.

On May 24, as North Korea upped its angry tone, Trump cancelled the meeting. However, a day before he took the call, North Korea dismantled its only nuclear test site in Punggye-ri in front of international media representatives.

The South Korean leadership, however, did not lose hope even after the North slammed it and the latest instance of the two Korean leaders meeting again to reinstate the prospects of the summit says how serious the Moon government is to give peace a chance in the Korean Peninsula.

Meanwhile, North Korea's state-run KCNA news agency said Kim expressed "his fixed will" over the possibility of the summit with Trump as it was previously planned, the Reuters report added.

North Korea did not retaliate after Trump cancelled the meeting and said it regretted the decision but still wanted to see the meeting taking place anywhere and in any form.

Moon returned from the US on Thursday, May 24, after meeting Trump where they spoke over keeping the summits on track.

He also conveyed the message of Trump's "firm will" to end the hostile relationship with Pyongyang and focus on bilateral economic cooperation, the report added.

He also urged both the US and North Korea to hold working-level meetings to resolve their differences, it added.
