Dhaka, July 4: Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh or the JMB had renamed itself Islamic State in the year 2014. The change in name was effected with a view of telling the world that their specific cause is to set up an Islamic State in Bangladesh. The name of the JMB has surfaced during the investigations that are being conducted into the attack at Dhaka.

The JMB since 2014 has restructured itself and focused operations not just in Bangladesh, but at Assam and West Bengal too.

The JMB had become the prime focus of the probe by the National Investigation Agency in the Burdwan case. The JMB had been training its operatives in West Bengal to prepare bombs, NIA investigations had revealed.

There was a pattern in the manner in which the JMB was functioning since 2014. They had branched out both in Bangladesh and West Bengal with a view of carrying out a series of attacks. However once the Burdwan module was busted, there was a change in modus operandi by the JMB.

The past year and a half have seen a surge in their activities in Bangladesh. They have indulged in target killings of foreigners, aid workers, bloggers and minorities.

The recent killing of a Hindu priest too has been attributed to the JMB. It had started becoming increasingly clear that the JMB was attempting to establish an Islamic State and hence the re-branding took place.

Their activities in India have been busted on several occasions. While the Burdwan incident was one module to be busted, their activities have been found at Assam too. Last year in the month of September a training camp of the JMB at Daukhanagar had been busted.

The cadres were imparting arms training at the camp. Further a recruitment camp of the JMB at Chirang in Assam too had been busted by the police.
