Ireland: 'Yes' side looks favourites in gay marriage referendum?
Dublin, May 23: The high turnout in the gay marriage referendum in Ireland on Friday is likely to favour the 'Yes' side eyeing equality just two decades after the country decided to decriminalise homosexuality. [Historic referendum in Ireland on gay marriage]
Opinion polls showed the proposal would pass by a decisive majority, making the European nation the first to approve same-sex marriage via a popular voting.
Final results are not expected until later on Saturday but state broadcaster RTE said the victory looked to be overwhelming and sources in government said the margin would be big.
"No" campaigners who sought to prevent the country's constitution from being amended to permit same-sex marriage, said the only concern on Saturday is how big the "yes" side's margin of victory will be.
Ireland's quality minister Aodhan O'Riordain told Reuters at the main count centre in Dublin that the results look to be favourable.
