London, Aug 1: Iran's senior officials and commanders on Tuesday, July 31, dumped US President Donald Trump's offer for talks without preconditions as worthless and "a dream", saying the latter's words contradicted his action of reimposing sanctions on the West Asian country, Reuters reported.

On May 8, Trump scuttled the 2015 nuclear deal which was made with Iran in 2015 when his predecessor Barack Obama was in office, saying it was unfairly benefiting Tehran, and reimposed sanctions on Iran that were there prior to the agreement.

Trump's Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani, on the other hand, trashed the former's repudiation of the 2015 deal, saying it was "illegal" and that Tehran would not easily yield to the US's efforts to strangle Iran's oil exports. The US has also warned other countries, including India, to curb oil transaction with Iran to zero - a fact which has also infuriated Tehran.

On Monday, July 30, Trump said he would be willing to meet Rouhani without any preconditions to discuss ways to improve relations.

The American president adopted a similar strategy vis-à-vis North Korea whose dictator Kim Jong-un met him in Singapore in June over denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula. However, in case of the US-North Korean reconciliation, it was Kim who had made the offer to talk with Trump.
