Bangkok, July 17: To avenge the death of a villager in crocodile attack, people from a village in Indonesia's West Papua area brutally killed 292 crocodiles using knives, machetes, swords and other sharp objects, said reports.

The brutal massacre of the reptiles was truly uncalled for as the villager, who was attacked by crocodiles, had wandered into a licensed sanctuary that breeds endangered saltwater and New Guinea crocodiles and had reportedly fallen into an enclosure of the reptiles.

There has been an outrage on the social media over the entire incident. People took to Twitter to criritise the action of the villagers, with one particular tweet saying, "1 kill vs 292 kills, what a justice! now I understand the difference between human and animals."

The incident took place in a village in Sorong district of West Papua province on Saturday after the man was buried. The 48-year-old was picking grass for animal feed when he entered an enclosure, AFP quoted the police and conservation officials as saying.

After the burial, angry villagers went to the farm and used machetes, knives and shovels to slaughter 292 crocodiles, ranging from babies to full-grown crocodiles. Outnumbered police and conservation officials were unable to prevent the attack and said criminal charges could be brought against the villagers.

Crocodiles are protected species in Indonesia and law enforcement agencies have promised a complete probe into the incident.
