Heavy snow had earlier rendered its runways inaccessible and the Geneva Airport's website had asked passengers to stay away "for the time being" and recommended that they check with their airlines to see if their flights are still scheduled for departure. Authorities had not specified the reason for the closure other than to cite "the prevailing weather conditions."

Latest reports say that the airport has reopened but it is not yet clear if the operations have fully resumed.

The overnight snowfall slowed traffic on motorways and other roads across the country.

Reports said that Swiss city received 13 centimetres of snow on the night intervening Wednesday and Thursday. A Siberian weather system forecasters have called the "beast from the east" brought snow, strong winds and the coldest temperatures for years to many regions across Europe.
