The Islamabad High Court on Thursday suspended the Election Commission's decision to refuse the registration of Hafiz Saeed's Milli Muslim League (MML), the political wing of the banned Jamaat -ud-Dawa (JuD), and directed the poll body to review its decision.

The Election Commission of Pakistan in September 2017 had refused to grant recognition to MML and warned leaders against using the party's name during election campaigns.

Hafiz Saeed announced in December, a few days after release from house arrest on 24 November, that his organisation will contest the 2018 elections. Milli Muslim League is an Islamist political party established by Jammat-ud-Dawa in 2017. Saifullah Khalid is president of Milli Muslim League.

The MML got the nod a day after Lahore High Court extended stay against 26/11Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed's detention. Ahead of the visit of the UN Security Council monitoring team here, the Lahore High Court on January 24 had restrained the federal government from arresting Saeed on his petition.

On January 23, Saeed had moved the court seeking protection from his possible arrest by the federal and the state governments, under the alleged pressure from the US and India.
