Tehran, March 7: Historically, they have been known to be enemies. Iraq and Iran had also fought an eight-year war in the 1980s and did not have much in common politically in the Saddam Hussein years. However, things have improved between the two West Asian neighbours in the post-Saddam phase and on Wednesday, March 6, Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mohamed al-Halbousi threw his country's weight behind Iran as the latter was put under increasing difficulty by the US's sanctions.

Speaking at a joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart Ali Larijani in Tehran, Halbousi said: "Just as Iran had positive stance in fighting terrorism, we will also support Iran against sanctions," the Tehran Times reported.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is set to visit Iraq soon and Iran said it will be a historic opportunity to arrive decisions on border issues, economic cooperation and others.
