The announcement was made after a meeting between Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Leader of the Opposition Khursheed Shah in Islamabad. Abbasi said that Mulk is a candidate for for caretaker PM as he is someone "who no one can object to", reported The Dawn.

"All the names under consideration were credible..Every name was discussed, and this name was decided upon," Dawn report quoted Abbasi as saying.

Last week, Khursheed Shah, who belongs to Pakistan Peoples Party, had said that he held five rounds of talks with Abbasi to form a consensus, but they could not agree on a single name.

The job of the caretaker PM is to keep the country running between the dissolution of parliament and the new government being sworn in.

Pakistan's Election Commission on May 21 proposed July 25-27 as possible dates for holding the general elections in the country.
