Dublin, July 28: The Dublin City Council had earlier this week voted in favour of scrapping the practice of using animals in circus acts in the Irish capital.

The motion for the ban was introduced by Noeleen Reilly, the councillor from Sinn Fein on Monday (July 25) and it was backed overwhelmingly by the councillors.

The move means circuses that use wild animals such as elephants, lions, hippos, camels, horses, crocodiles and tigers will not be allowed to use public land in Dublin.

The move was welcomed by animal rights activists from all across.

"With countries all over the world introducing such legislation, Ireland still has much to do to bring our outdated and old-fashioned views of using animals for entertainment into modern century thinking," Animal Rights Action Network spokesperson John Carmody said.

Several other local authorities in Ireland have already imposed the ban and the activists were hopeful that it would ultimately lead to a national ban as in countries like Austria, Croatia and the Netherlands.
