The thing is that the toothbrush that you keep in the bathroom is covered in the faecal matter that is floating around in the air in the closet after every flush you make.

Unless you close the lid of your commode when you flush, particles from the waste are thrown into the air and they settle on every surface that is on offer, including the bristles of the brushes.

The danger lies in the fact that these particles can contain harmful bugs like E.coli and norovirus and that goes inside your body without any resistance.

"A toothbrush can contain at least 200,000 bacteria per square inch - more than the average toilet seat," the report cited a study as saying.

"Hygiene expert Ralitsa Prodanova told the Metro: "These bio-aerosols can be extremely harmful - and the airborne water droplets are often contaminated with viruses and bacteria"," the report added.

It also cited a study at USA's Quinnipiac University as saying that there is a 60 per cent chance that toothbrush is covered with faeces.

And if you are keeping your toothbrush in bathrooms used by many, well, you can well imagine...

Even a toothbrush cover or using hot water to cover it in won't help, the experts have warned.
