London, July 12: UK Prime Minister David Cameron on Monday (July 11) said he will step down on Wednesday (July 13), paving way for Home Secretary Theresa May to succeed him as the next occupant of 10 Downing.

Cameron expressed his desire to quit the office after a majority of the people of the UK decided to exit the European Union in a historic referendum held on June 23. He said after the Brexit that he would step down by October and that the country would pursue its post-Brexit plans under a new PM. [What is Brexit?]

However, the Brexit left quite an impact with a lot of prominent leaders either quitting or facing a backlash in their own parties.

Cameron said it was clear that May had an "overwhelming support" in the Conservative Party and also praised Andrea Leadsom for quitting the race for the leadership. Leadsom withdrew from the race earlier on Monday.

The outgoing PM said he will attend the final session of Prime Minister's Questions in the House of Commons on Wednesday before visiting Queen Elizabeth to tender his resignation. Cameron led the Conservatives to bag a sweeping victory in the general election in 2015.

The British Queen plays the formal role of appointing the new leader.

May, thus, will become the second woman to become the prime minister of the UK after the late Margaret Thatcher.
