Washington, June 30: The eventual Brexit on March 29 next year will see the relationship between the US and Ireland getting stronger and the rise of the European country as the main bridge between the US and Europe, Irish Ambassador to the US Daniel Mulhall has said, the Guardian reported.

Brexit will be UK’s loss but Ireland’s gain, feels Irish envoy to US

Mulhall's thinking stems from the fact that with the departure of the UK from the European Union (EU), Ireland will remain as the only predominantly English-speaking member of the grouping and it will brighten its chance as the natural destination for American investors looking for a base in Europe, thanks to its long and special relationship with the US, the Guardian report cited Mulhall as saying.

Mulhall, who has served as Ireland's ambassador to the UK in the past, spoke about his experience in finding an anxiety over Brexit prevailing from London to Washington, the report added.

"Since I arrived here last August, I've found that I've been asked about Brexit more often than anything else that I've had to deal with," the Guardian cited Mulhall as saying. The 63-year-old diplomat also said that the biggest concerns he faced were about the how the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland would be like after Brexit and what effect a hardened border will have on the Good Friday Agreement of the late 1990s on the Northern Ireland pace process.

Mulhall said Ireland had little options when it came to Brexit but would have little choice but to balance out the negative impact of the political development with the positives, the Guardian report added.
