London, July 10: The Theresa May government of the UK was in the middle of an emergency management after a series of members quit it over the question of Brexit, the latest being the high profile foreign secretary Boris Johnson who accused Prime Minister May of pursing a "semi Brexit".

Brexit exits: May govt left in hotchpotch; health secy Jeremy Hunt replaces Boris Johnson

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt was made the new foreign secretary after Johnson tendered his resignation on Monday, July 9. Johnson's departure came in the wake of the exit of Brexit Secretary David Davis and other junior officials.

Culture Secretary Matt Hancock was named the new health secretary succeeding Hunt.

The UK is set to leave the European Union (EU) on March 29, 2019, but it is not clear as to how trade relations between the UK and EU will proceed thereafter.

The UK's Conservative Party is also uncertain over what will be the Brexit's shape and on Friday, July 6, the cabinet made a "collective" deal at Chequers on proposals for the future terms between the UK and EU.

The new foreign secretary said he would back PM May over the deal reached at Chequers, unlike Johnson who believed the proposals made by May for post-Brexit trade would only make the UK a "colony" of the EU, BBC reported. He accused the PM of suffocating the Brexit dream and said the UK was only on its way to achieve a "semi-Brexit" with a large part of the UK economy remaining stuck in the EU system but with the former having no control over it.

May said she was a little surprised by Johnson's sudden resignation after he apparently backed the deal on Friday.
