One of the worst hit areas was central Paris where the celebrations turned into looting, rioting and clash between the fans and the police. The lawkeepers even fired tear gas shells and splashed water canons to disperse the crowd from the Champs Elysees avenue late on Sunday after the celebrations went too following France's 4-2 win over Croatia. The venue remained shut on Monday (July 16) morning.

It was France's second title since 1998 when they defeated Brazil 3-0 in the final at home. French President Emmanuel Macron was seen celebrating the moments during France's progress in the final in unusual ways in the box at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium where the concluding game of World Cup 2018 was played.

In Annecy, located some 350 miles east of Paris, a 50-year-old man broke his neck after plunging into a canal after the final whistles went.

In Saint-Felix, a man in his 30s lost his life after his car went out of control and rammed into a tree. It happened as he was celebrating the win.

As the celebrations turned wild and saw ransacking of shops and attacks on law-keepers, the police quickly turned into action and shut the transportation services.

Over a lakh security personnel were deployed in France for the Bastille Day celebrations on July 14 and the World Cup final the next day.
