Washington, June 9: In the wake of the US backing India on its bid to enter the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), Pakistan has formally asked Washington and the US Congress to support its bid too, said a report published in Dawn newspaper.

On Tuesday (June 7), US President Barack Obama formally endorsed India's application to join the 48-nation cartel which oversees global trade in civilian nuclear materials and it had expected repercussions on Pakistan's political and foreign office establishment.

Islamabad submitted a formal application in Vienna in May, expressing its willingness to join the group. But none of the US administration and Congress are ready to cater to the former's wish, said the article in Dawn.

In a letter to the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, Pakistan's Ambassador to US Jalil Abbas Jilani said that his country has taken a series of steps that make it qualified to join the NSG.

"Pakistan's desire to participate in the NSG stands on solid grounds of technical experience, capability and well-established commitment to nuclear safety," the ambassador wrote, as per the Dawn report.
"Pakistan has operated secure and safeguarded nuclear power plants for over 42 years. Safe and sustainable civil nuclear energy is essential for Pakistan's future energy security and its economic development," he added, said the report.

Pakistan has also warned the NSG that India's inclusion in the body would adversely affect the strategic stability in South Asia.
