"The attacker detonated a car bomb close to the foreign armoured military vehicles. The blast killed the bomber on the spot and injured three other civilians," Kabul police chief General Abdul Rahman Rahimi said.

"Two military vehicles, out of the four-vehicle motorcade, were severely damaged by the blast. Several civilian vehicles were also damaged by the attack," the witness said.

The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the rush-hour attack.

Troops cordoned off the area shortly after the blast, keeping people from gathering at the scene, fearing that there might be a second blast.
