A month after Singapore summit, Trump tweets ‘very nice note’ from Kim Jong-Un

Washington, July 13: US President Donald Trump on Thursday, June 12, tweeted a letter written to him by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on July 6, calling it "a very nice note" and hailed the denuclearisation process with the East Asian nation which is currently underway.

Thursday also marked the completion of one month since Trump held a historic summit with Kim in Singapore.

The four-paragraph letter, in which Kim expressed hope about a "new future" and spoke of his "invariable trust" in the US president was, however, penned on the day when US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo landed in North Korea for talks that turned out to be acrimonious, agencies reported.

The letter also saw Kim describing the month-old Singapore summit and the joint statement the two leaders made after the talks as the "start of a meaningful journey".

"I firmly believe that the strong will, sincere efforts and unique approach of myself and Your Excellency Mr. President aimed at opening up a new future between the DPRK and the US will surely come to fruition," Kim's letter read, according to the translation that Trump tweeted.

"I deeply appreciate the energetic and extraordinary efforts made by Your Excellency Mr. President for the improvement of relations between the two countries and the faithful implementation of the joint statement," the North Korean leader further said.

Pompeo went to Pyongyang on a two-day trip last week with the purpose of fulfilling the commitments towards denuclearisation made during the Singapore summit. The state secretary later said in Japan that the talks were making progress and there was an ambience of "good faith".

But North Korea's take on the matter was entirely opposite as it alleged that the future of the peace process was being put into trouble by the US's "unilateral and gangster-like" demands aiming for Pyongyang's nuclear disarmament.

Meanwhile, agencies reported that US asked the UN Security Council to take punitive measures against North Korea for violating restrictions on refined oil imports. No response was found from the North Korean side, according to the reports.
