Triple Talaq bill: Main points of contention between Govt, opposition

|

New Delhi, July 25: The Lok Sabha on Thursday passed the contentious Triple Talaq Bill after a noisy debate which saw Trinamool Congress MPs staging a walk out of the Lower House. A heated debate was held in Lok Sabha during which Union Law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the bill was not about religion, but about gender equality. The proposed legislation, which seeks to criminalise instant triple talaq among Muslims, has been controversial ever since its inception following a SC judgement in 2017.

The BJP, which had issued a whip to its MPs to ensure maximum strength in the House, had fielded its women members -- Meenakshi lekhi, Poonam Mahajan, Aparajita Sarangi, to participate in the debate. The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019, seeks to criminalise instant triple talaq. Opposing the bill, Asaduddin Owaisi (AIMIM) said there are nine types of talaqs in Islam. Owaisi asked if the husband is jailed, as the bill proposes, then how will he be able to pay the maintainance to his wife while sitting in the jail.

Here are some issues on which the Govt and the opposition locked horns:
