Women's day: Dip in cases of rape in Bengaluru, dowry is worse

As the world celebrates International women's day the glaring reality of crimes against women in the country shows there is a long way to go to make our cities and villages safe for women. In Bengaluru city alone, the number of cases of crimes against women in 2016 stood at 2346 out of which 2170 cases were detected, according to police records.

Women's day: Dip cases of rape in Bengaluru, dowry is worse

A dip was seen in the number of rape cases in 2016 with 96 as against previous year's number of 114. Cases of molestation, dowry death and cases under the Dowry prohibition act, saw an increase in comparison to 2015. A total of 776 cases of molestation were reported in the city in 2016 as against 714 cases in 2015. Unfortunate dowry deaths stood at 57, five more than the previous year. As many as 727 cases were registered under the dowry prohibition act which was an increase from 2015's 714 cases.

According to police records, no cases of Indecent representation of women have been reported since 2014. In 2017, till the end of January, a total of 208 cases of crimes against women have been reported. Out of the 208 cases, 86 are cases of molestation and 10 are rape cases.
