The Assam police alone has arrested 54 operatives in the past six months. The figure is an alarming one. Going by the numbers based on an Intelligence Bureau report, 720 of these operatives entered through West Bengal while the rest found a passage through Assam and Tripura.

The JMB has been setting up shop in India and is sending its operatives in large numbers. In particular, Bengal has been a worry for the security agencies. The Burdwan incident was a classic example of how terrorists from Bangladesh had been swarming like bees in Bengal.

Owing to the major crackdown in Bangladesh on radical elements, many have decided to move into Bengal and Assam where they have found a safe haven. They enter into India with the help of touts along the border. Once in India, they meet up with local contacts.

Intelligence Bureau officials say that these persons stay on in India and plot attacks that are to be executed in Bangladesh. There is a danger for India as well as these operatives now linked with the Islamic State will look to strike in India as well. Central agencies have often complained about the lack of enthusiasm in West Bengal to crack down on such persons. There are over 1,000 of them and it is high time that the alarm bells rang in West Bengal and the neighbouring states as well, the IB official informed.
