"I will treat Arvind Kejriwal as one of my poor clients and appear for him free," senior advocate Ram Jethmalani said on Tuesday. His reactions comes a day after a letter was shot off to the lieutenant governor of Delhi seeking approval to foot Kejriwal's bill in a defamation case filed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.

A letter written by Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia to the Lt Governor Anil Baijal states that the comments made by Kejriwal were in the capacity of a CM and hence the government must foot the bill.

Jethmalani told news agency ANI that he charged only rich clients. He would now treat Kejriwal as a poor client and appear for him free of cost.

The case in question is the one filed by Jaitley in connection with the DDCA incident. Jaitley had filed a defamation case against Kejriwal following his comments. He had sought Rs 10 crore in damages.

Sisodia in his letter wrote that the statements made by the chief minister are in the official capacity and hence it is duty bound that he be provided a good lawyer.

Jethmalani had sent a bill of Rs 1 crore as retainer and also charged Rs 22 lakh per appearance. The L-G had sought a legal opinion on the Delhi government's demand for Jethmalanai representing Kejriwal.
