New Delhi, March 20: On Monday, a group of women leaders and activists staged a protest demanding the early passage of the Women's Reservation Bill that aims to bring 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state legislatures in the national capital.

The protest was headed by Member of Parliament from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam -- the main opposition party in Tamil Nadu -- M Kanimozhi. Speaking to reporters, Kanimozhi lamented that the political parties including the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Congress and other regional parties have supported the controversial bill, but it has not been passed in Parliament and made into a law date.

"Why has the bill not been passed yet? Why has it not become a law yet? We want to bring attention back to the Women's Reservation Bill," Kanimozhi told ANI. "For the past 20 years, the Women's Reservation Bill has not been implemented. Nobody is talking about it. The DMK's women's wing along with several women's rights organisations is holding an agitation on this issue," she said.

The MP said that the women's wing of the DMK has approached like-minded parties which believe in the Women's Reservation Bill to support its demand. "The BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi can definitely implement the bill if they give it a thought," Kanimozhi said.
