Why the death threat to Hafiz Saeed is an exaggerated hoax

A few days back there was a letter shot off in Pakistan in which a death threat to Lashkar-e-Tayiba chief, Hafiz Saeed was spoken about. The letter stated that Saeed, the mastermind of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks was under threat as a foreign agency had paid off Rs 80 to kill him.

The entire incident has been analysed by the Indian agencies who feel that the threat perception is exaggerated and this appears to be a larger ploy.

Saeed who is under detention has been upping the pressure on the agencies to secure his release. Saeed and his Lashkar-e-Tayiba continue to be major players in Pakistan and for both the army and ISI, he is extremely crucial for them in Kashmir.

Briefly there was a surge in the activities of the Jaish-e-Mohammad in the Valley. There were some issues between the ISI and the Lashkar-e-Tayiba with the members of the latter stating that the agency was not doing enough for their boss.

Saeed has been under house arrest in Lahore since January 30 under the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997. The home department last month had extended his detention for another 30 days (till November 26) under public safety law.

The department's notification had said, "There is apprehension that Saeed shall create a law and order situation upon release".

There is a great deal of frustration that is brewing among the cadres of the terror group. With Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi being asked to take a back seat and Saeed in jail most of the cadres have become directionless as of now.
