Why is India's hunger problem worse than Nepal and Bangladesh?

Grappling with a "serious" hunger problem, India has been ranked 100th among 119 developing countries on the Global Hunger Index (GHI), leaving behind North Korea, Bangladesh and even the besieged Iraq, but ahead of Pakistan, according to a report. India's wasting rate has not substantially improved over the last 25 years, even though the child stunting rate has improved over this period.

How many people are starving in India?
Over 20 crore Indians sleep hungry. 10 million people die every year of chronic hunger and hunger-related diseases. Only eight percent are the victims of hunger caused by high-profile earthquakes, floods, droughts and wars.

In the global hunger index, India ranks 100th out of 119 countries, behind North Korea, Bangladesh and Iraq but ahead of Pakistan.
97 million children underweight even as obesity soars Globally
India is one of the few regions in the world with a high number of undernourished children. It had 97 million moderately to severely underweight children in 2016, according to the study. In this category, it reports the highest numbers anywhere in the world. Other countries with large populations of undernourished children are Niger, Senegal, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Cambodia-nations that are economically weaker than India.
India is largest food producer
Though India is the world's second largest food producer, it is also home to the second highest population of under-nourished in the world.
