Hyderabad, Oct 15: The naxal movement which had taken backseat in Andhra Pradesh is trying to raise its ugly head once again by raking up the issue of bauxite mining. The release of the three TDP leaders who were in naxal captivity for ten days gives a clear picture as to what the demand was.

Three TDP leaders from abducted by naxals from near Vishakapatanam ten days back. They were however released late on Wednesday with a clear instruction that these leaders shall not affiliate with any political party and actively oppose the mining of bauxite.

Why Naxals are against Bauxite mining?

Why are the naxals opposing bauxite mining?

The naxals are known to thrive on local support. They are fully aware that the issue of bauxite mining is very close to the heart of the Girijans. The Girijans have been opposing bauxite mining in the Vishakapatanam district for several years now.

In fact last year they had even intensified their efforts to oppose such mining. The Girijans say that if bauxite mining is not stopped then they would be uprooted from their traditional belts. Moreover with all the land gone, they would deprived of their daily bread.

The Girijans have also said that the bauxite reserve is being exploited to a large extent and in the process it would also destroy the flora and fauna. Rivers would drive up and the Girijans would suffer the most.

The naxals realize that this is a very emotive issue for the Girijans. Taking up this cause would mean getting the support of the Girijans. Moreover the governments too have not done anything commendable on the issue of bauxite mining and the Girijans are likely to support anyone who fights for them. Getting the support of the Girijans would help naxals in a big way.

Not only would they have sympathizers, but these people would also come forward and provide them with ample intelligence. Naxals have very often thrived with the support of the locals and when it has been absent, they have been wiped out.

Message to the TDP

While releasing the three TDP leaders, the naxals told them not to be part of any political party in future. They were told to actively take part in the struggle to end bauxite mining in the area.

The leaders who were taken hostage ten days back were subjected to a Praja Court in the Chitrakonda forest area in which a decision was taken that there would be no more politics for them. The Praja Court also ordered them to take part in an anti bauxite mining drive in the Vishakapatanam district.
