Kolkata, Feb 23: If the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh wants public buildings and religious institutions to be painted in saffron--the colour of ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)--in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government has asked all government schools to be painted in blue-white--the colour combination associated with the ruling party.

In fact, the diktat of the Mamata Banerjee government has been opposed by a school, which already flaunts the colour saffron. According to a report by ANI, Krishnachandra High School in Diamond Harbour wrote a letter to authorities asking to let the school building retain its saffron paint.

The report of ANI added that recently under the "Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan", the state government issued a notice to all government schools to be painted in blue-white colour and give a picture of uniformity to all the educational institutions.

It is not for the first time that the TMC government in the state has insisted on painting public buildings in blue and white colour. The dash of blue-white is known to be chief minister Banerjee's favourite colour. She always wears white sarees with a blue border. Even she wears blue-white slippers.

Earlier, opposition parties had criticised the TMC government for painting several buildings and roads of Kolkata in blue-white colour. In fact, the CM had told earlier that her government would give incentives to people if they paint their houses in blue-white.

The resistance shown by Krishnachandra High School in Diamond Harbour to not paint its building in blue-white hue might not be taken lightly by the ruling TMC government. Moreover, the school in the dock will face the ire of authorities as it insists upon flaunting saffron, the colour of BJP, which the CM is known to "dislike".

After assuming power in March last year, CM Yogi has pursued the BJP's "saffron" agenda in UP with great zeal. First, he got the Lal Bahadur Shastri Bhawan in Lucknow, his office, painted in saffron.

In January, the Haj House in Lucknow, used by Muslims as a transit place on their way to pilgrimage in Mecca, was also painted in saffron. Earlier the building had a green-and-white exterior. However, after facing criticism, the Haj House was repainted and got its original colour.

In reply to a barrage of criticism, the BJP stated that painting buildings in saffron is actually a "nationalistic" (another favourite term of the ruling party to fan passion among voters) step, as the Tricolour also has saffron colour in it.
