Chandigarh, May 7: In a shocking incident, girl students of a college in Patiala, Punjab decided to take the matter into their hands (rather in a violent manner) by beating up one of their professors for allegedly sending them obscene messages over the phone.

In a viral video, a group of young students from the Government College for Girls in Patiala was seen hitting the professor mercilessly for sending them sexually-explicit texts. While the teacher tried to save himself from being attacked by the girls, the students followed him hitting and cursing him for his crimes inside the college campus.

As three girls beat him with their hands, another student was seen filming the entire episode. However, the name of the teacher is not yet revealed and it's not clear whether the victims have approached the police.

"#WATCH: Professor of Government College for Girls in Patiala gets beaten up by students for allegedly sending obscene messages to the girls," tweeted ANI.

Recently, a professor from the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi was also arrested for sexually harassing women students in the varsity. Later, Atul Johri of JNU was granted bail. Several protests were held in the national capital demanding his arrest.

The cases of sexual harassment against women students in educational institutions have come to light at a time when the nation has been rocked by rapes of women and minors.

A few weeks ago, the nation witnessed several protests in the wake of gang-rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua and rape of a teenager by a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao.

Both the cases caught the attention of the nation because of its barbarity and open support for the accused from a section of the ruling BJP. After its "studied silence" over crimes against women, especially minor girls, the Narendra Modi government approved the ordinance to allow courts to award death penalty to those convicted of raping girls under 12 recently.

In spite of the protests and a new law, things remain the same as several cases of rapes and murders of minors have been reported from across the country.
