Voting for 58 Rajya Sabha seats from 16 states to be held on March 23
The Election Commission (EC) on Friday announced polls to 58 Rajya Sabha seats from 16 states will be held on March 23. Last date of filing nominations is March 12.
The Election Commission released the schedule for the biennial polls to be held for 58 Rajya Sabha seats, which will fall vacant in April-May.
Among those Rajya Sabha MPs whose terms are drawing towards conclusion, 9 represent the state of Uttar Pradesh. Pollsters claim the current party-position in UP assembly, where the BJP holds over 2/3rd majority, with allows the saffron party to replace maximum among the incumbent lawmakers.
The vacancies to be filled are 10 seats from Uttar Pradersh, six each from Bihar and Maharashtra; five each from West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh; four each from Gujarat and Karnataka; three each from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha and Rajasthan; two from Jharkhand; and one seat each from Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
The MPs from UP whose term will end on April 2 are: Naresh Agarwal, Jaya Bachchan, Kiranmay Nanda, Chaudhary Munawar Saleem, Alok Tiwari and Darshan Singh Yadav (all SP), Munquad Ali (BSP), Pramod Tiwari (Congress) and Vinay Katiyar (BJP).
Besides the biennial elections, the EC also announced bypoll to a Rajya Sabha seat from Kerala after M P Veerendra Kumar resigned in December. His term was to end in April 2022.
