Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat has tendered his resignation after losing both his seats from Haridwar Rural and Kichha constituencies. Rawat lost to the BJP's Swami Yatishwaranand by about 12,000 votes in Haridwar Rural and lost to Rajesh Shukla by 103 votes.

"In thank Modi and the EVM chamatkar (miracle)," he said in a press conference after tendering his resignation which was accepted by Governor K K Paul.

The Congress is set to make way for the Bharatiya Janata Party in Uttarakhand, and the saffron party, who would now have to choose a chief minister candidate.

An few days ago, BJP national president Amit Shah had said that the chief minister would be selected from the newly-elected legislators and the frontrunners are The front-runners Ajay Bhatt, Prakash Pant, Satpal Maharaj, and Trivendra Singh Rawat.

While keeping the tradition of throwing out the incumbent party, the saffron party is heading for the biggest win for any party in this hill state.
