Samajwadi Party's candidate from Amethi for the ongoing assembly elections, Gayatri Prajapati has gone missing. The rape accused went untraceable, even as police conducted raids at his residence in Lucknow on Tuesday. On Supreme Court's directions, the Uttar Pradesh Police closed in on the minister but found him missing. Police claim that teams have now been sent to Amethi to look for the rape accused leader.

The police even told the media that the SP leader would be arrested as soon as he was traced. Gayatri Prajapati, known to be a Mulayam Singh loyalist, has gone 'missing' days before the elections conclude in Uttar Pradesh. The move to close in on him came only after the Supreme Court prodded the UP government to act. Meanwhile, Prajapati has moved the Supreme Court for protection from arrest and the plea is likely to be heard next week.

A woman in her complaint had alleged gang-rape by the 49-year-old politician and his associates. The victim had also claimed that her 17-year-old daughter was molested by the gang. The woman alleges that she moved the supreme Court only after the local police refused to take up a case when she approached them way back in October 2016.

It may be noted that Gayatri Prajapati was seen recently in SP's campaign rallies and public meetings. Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav refused to share the stage with Prajapati during a public address following criticisms by the BJP. A man who had no qualms about appearing in public for campaigning has all of a sudden gone 'missing', making it clear that it is a matter of convenience.
