Uproar in Haryana assembly over Anil Vij's comment on Gurmehar Kaur
Anil Vij said that those who are supporting Gurmehar Kaur for her campaign against the ABVP, were pro-Pakistan and should be thrown out of the country.
Pandemonium prevailed in the Haryana assembly on Friday over BJP state minister Anil Vij's comment on those supporting Delhi University student Gurmehar Kaur were pro-Pakistan and should be thrown out of India.
On Wednesday, Anil Vij said that those who are supporting Gurmehar Kaur for her campaign against the ABVP, were pro-Pakistan and should be thrown out of the country. This came after Gurmehar Kaur backed off from the stir after being threatened.
However, Vij didn't back down his comments today. ''I fully stand by what I said, those opposing it in the assembly have no understanding, they are siding with anti-national forces,'' Vij said.
Vij is not new to courting controversies. In January this year, the minister said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was a bigger brand than Mahatma Gandhi. This was right after Modi's face replaced Gandhiji in the annual khadi calendar.
Kaur, a student of Lady Shri Ram College and daughter of an army officer killed in the Kargil war, launched a social media campaign against the ABVP after the violence in Ramjas College. Kaur posted a picture on Facebook saying: "I am a student of Delhi University. I am not afraid of ABVP. I am not alone. Every student of India is with me." She then received rape and life threats on social media by some who called her 'anti-national'.
Clashes took place at Delhi University's Ramjas college on February 22 after ABVP members forced the cancellation of a seminar and then disrupted a march.
