One thousand four hundred and fifty seven crorepatis contested the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. The richest candidate is Nazir Ahmed of the Congress who has declared assets worth Rs 211 crore. He is followed by the Shah Alam Urf Guddu Jamali of the bahujan Samaj Party with assets worth Rs 118 crore. Third on the list with assets worth Rs 114 crore is Satish Kumar Sharma of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

A comprehensive report prepared by the Association for Democratic Reforms states that out of the 4,823 candidates analysed, 1457 (30%) are crorepatis. Out of 6,590 candidates analysed during Uttar Pradesh 2012 assembly elections, 1,319 (20%) candidates were crorepatis.

Three hundred and thirty-five (84%) out of 400 fielded by the BSP, 302 (79%) out of 383 candidates from BJP, 243 (79%) out of 307 candidates from SP, 99 (36%) out of 276 candidates from Rashtriya Lok Dal, 75 (66%) out of 114 candidates fielded by Indian National Congress, 24 (30%) out of 80 candidates fielded by Lok Dal, 17 (25%) out of 68 candidates fielded by Peace Party, 3 (10%) out of 30 candidates of NCP and 182 (13%) out of 1,453 independent candidates have declared assets worth more than Rs. 1 crore.

Among major parties, the average assets per candidate for 400 BSP candidates is Rs 6.27 crore, 383 BJP candidates have average assets of Rs 5.00 crore, 307 SP candidates have average assets worth Rs 4.38 crore, 276 RLD candidates have average assets worth Rs 1.98 crore, 114 INC candidates have average assets worth Rs 6.30 crore, 80 Lok Dal candidates have average assets worth Rs 1.34 crore, average assets of 68 Peace Party candidates are Rs 86.94 lakh, 69 CPI candidates have average assets of Rs 37.42 lakh and 1,453 Independent candidates have average assets of Rs. 70.33 lakh.

Criminal cases:

Out of the 4,823 candidates analysed in 2017, 859 (18%) candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves. Out of 6,590 candidates analysed during Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections in 2012, 1278 (19%) candidates had declared criminal cases against themselves.

Seven hundred and four (15%) candidates have declared serious criminal cases including cases related to rape, murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, culpable homicide, communal disharmony, electoral violations, crimes against women etc.

Out of 6,590 candidates analysed during Uttar Pradesh assembly elections in 2012, 557 (8%) Candidates had declared serious criminal cases against themselves.

One hundred and fifty (38%) out of 400 candidates from the BSP, 137 (36%) out of 383 candidates from the BJP, 113 (37%) out of 307 candidates from the SP, 56 (20%) out of 276 candidates fielded by the RLD, 36 (32%) out of 114 candidates from the INC, and 150 (10%) out of 1,453 independent candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.

Party wise Candidates with Serious Criminal Cases: One hundred and twenty three (31%) out of 400 candidates from BSP, 100 (26%) out of 383 candidates from the BJP, 88 (29%) out of 307 candidates from the SP, 48 (17%) out of 276 candidates fielded by the RLD, 25 (22%) out of 114 candidates fielded by the INC and 134 (9%) out of 1,453 independent candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
