Unable to pay debt, farmer ends life in Maharashtra

Ahmednagar: Unable to repay debt, a 30-year-old farmer committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree in his farm on Sunday in Ahmednagr of Maharashtra.

According to police, the farmer identified as Vinod Haribhau Pote, 30, a resident of Dhotri village had been taking loans from local moneylenders and later found hard to repay them after finding his drought-hit crops. The loss and debt burden might be the reason behind the extreme step, said the local police officer. A case was registered and an investigation is on for further details of the suicide case.

In 2016, as many as 116 farmers have committed suicide due to agrarian reasons. The maximum cases were reported in Maharashtra, followed by Punjab and Telangana.

More than 2,000 farmers' suicide cases were reported due to agrarian reasons in 2015 with highest number of 1,841 cases in Maharashtra alone.

As per the data, 57 cases of farmers' suicides were reported in Maharashtra on February 29 this year, while 56 farm labourers' suicide cases in Punjab were registered on March 11, 2016. In Telangana, there were three cases.

In total, 116 farmers and labourers committed suicide in last three months due to agrarian reasons, the data showed.
