The government cleared the air on the purported 'snub' to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau who is on a 7 day visit to India. Questions had been raised about Trudeau being given a lukewarm response on his arrival in India.

The government also brushed aside questions as to why Gujarat Chief Minister, Vijay Rupani had not received the Canadian PM at the airport. The CM was unable to receive him as he was in the assembly where the governor addressed the first day of the budget session, Chief Secretary J N Singh told reporters.

Some had raised questions after Prime Minister Narendra Modi had not received the Canadian PM. A customary tweet from the PM welcoming the dignitary was also missing. Further on Sunday, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath too did not meet Trudeau when he visited Agra.

However MEA officials clarified that there was no snub as is being reported. The government has gone by the book, the official also said. On being asked if the response was in reaction to the Khalistan issue, the official said that as per protocol the PM does not go to the airport to receive dignitaries. It is only when the situation merits it is there is a departure from the protocol, the officer also explained.
