Truckers' strike to affect supply of diesel, petrol from today

Protesting against the sharp increase in third-party insurance premium, goods vehicles owners across states have started an indefinite strike.

The lorry owners association on Tuesday has decided to intensify the ongoing strike in order to press for their demands including withdrawal of increase in the premium for third party insurance, hike in penalty and toll fee. Until their demands are met, the truck drivers have also announced that they will stop supplying petrol and diesel across South India.

In a bid to resolve the stand-off, the strikers met Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India Chairman on Monday in Hyderabad, however, the meeting was a failure.

According to the South India Motor Transport Association general secretary G R Shanmugappa, who was also present at the meeting said that no decision was taken at the meeting in a bid to solve the issue.

Over 5 lakh trucks remained off the roads, paralysing the movement of goods.

The strike has impacted the supply of LPG gas and reality sector. According to the Bharat Gas franchisee owner, those who totally depend on rented trucks are facing the heat of the strike. Also, the construction work has been stopped because of no supply of sand and many labourers have lost their jobs too.

Meanwhile, Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy said the Union government has to resolve most of the demands of truck drivers. However, the minor demands of the truck drivers can be resolved by the state governments.
