Lucknow, July 22: BJP MP from Unnao Sakshi Maharaj has made yet another controversial remark and said that those who want Shariat law in the country "should go to Pakistan".

He was reacting to AIMPLB's recent demand to set up courts governed by Sharia in every district of the country.

"India is the world's largest democracy. Indian Constitution is very strong. Those who need 'Shariat' should go to Pakistan. India will be governed only according to its Constitution and not as per any Shariat," Maharaj reportedly said.

The BJP MP from Uttar Pradesh said those who do not have faith in the Constitution of India, "have no right" to stay in the country. "We would be happy bidding them farewell," he added, as per a PTI report.

Maharaj is not new to controversies. He had stirred a hornet's nest last year by saying that "Those with four wives and 40 children are responsible for the population increase in the country."

He has also made headlines defended self-styled godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who was convicted of rape, describing him as a "simple person".
