Granting him a two-year extension in the Central Reserve Police Force proved to be costly. A CRPF head constable, who was martyred in the Chhattisgarh Naxal attack had promised his family that he would be back in two months. He was due to retire from service in 30 days, but as fate would have it, he never returned.

Padmanabhan was due to retire in 2015. However, he was granted an extension of two years. He was due to retire in May. He is survived by his wife Maheshwari, son Muralidharan and daughter Monica. His son and daughter are aged 5 and 2, respectively.

Senthil Kumar's case is heart rendering. He took up a tough job only to ensure that his child Shakthipriyan got the best of education. He was the sole breadwinner of the house after his father retired from the PWD. He had told his wife Vidya to relocate to Coimbatore so that their child could get good education.
