The important judgements the Indian Judiciary is being hailed for

The Indian Judiciary has been in its top form over this week, starting from striking down instant triple talaq, to declaring Right to Privacy a fundamental right, and convicting rape accused, and Dera Sacha Sauda Chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the judiciary has served justice in every way possible.

On Monday, the quantum of punishment for Dera Chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh will be announced in a local court near Rohtak jail.

Security has been beefed up in Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab, and also in the Capital, post the violence that erupted after the conviction of the self-styled Godman by a special CBI court in Panchkula, which claimed the lives of over 30 poeple.

Here's a quick look at what the Indian Judiciary achieved this week:

Conviction of self-syled Godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh

A special CBI court in Panchkula on August 25, 2017, convicted Dera Sacha Sauda Chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh of rape, dating back to 2002.

The Quantum of Punishment for the Dera Chief will be announced on Aug 28, Monday, in a specialo court near Rohtak jail.

Enraged Dera followers violently protested against the conviction of their chief. Over 30 lives were lost, over 250 injured, buses and trains were vandalised.

The High Court did not hesitate to come down heavily on the Khattar Government in Haryana as well as the Central Government for the violence that erupted post conviction of Ram Rahim.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court even accused the State Government of being in 'Complete Collusion' with Dera followers.

Right to Privacy declared a fundamental right

On August 24, 2017 a nine-judge Constitution bench declared Right to Privacy a fundamental right, overruling its earlier verdicts in the cases of of M.P Sharma in 1950 and Kharak Singh in 1962, which said that Right to Privacy is not a fundamental right.

The Top Court held that Right to Privacy is intrinsic to the fundamental rights of an Indian citizen and falls under Article 21 and Part III of the Indian Constitution.

Post the decision of the Supreme Court, section 377 of the IPC - which criminalised homosexuality calling it an 'unnatural offence', the Court said - "Sexual orientation is an essential attribute of privacy. Discrimination against an individual on the basis of sexual orientation is deeply offensive to the dignity and self-worth of the individual. Equality demands that the sexual orientation of each individual in society must be protected on an even platform. The right to privacy and the protection of sexual orientation lies at the core of the fundamental rights guaranteed by Articles 14, 15 and 21 of the Constitution."

Instant triple talaq struck down

The Apex Court in a landmark judgment on Aug 22, 2017 struck down instant triple talaq, by a majority judgment of 3:2, calling the practice a violation of Article 14 of the Indian Constitution which guarantees every citizen right to equality before the law.

The verdict by the Top Court has been called 'historic', which delivered relief to Muslim women in the country, who until then were victimised by age-old practise of arbitrary divorce and had no option to defend their rights.

With these three verdicts back to back, the Indian Judiciary has ensured that it will always safeguard the rights of the citizens and is being hailed for its recent verdicts.
