SYL issue: Haryana govt moves SC seeking status quo

New Delhi, Nov 17: A day after Punjab passed two unanimous resolutions against construction of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal, the Haryana Government on Thursday approached the Supreme Court seeking a status quo in the matter.
Parkash Singh Badal-led government had yesterday convened a special session to pass the resolutions.
The apex court, on November 10, termed the bill passed in Punjab Assembly in 2004 to terminate water sharing pacts with neighbouring states as "unconstitutional".
Yesterday's resolution also seeks to denotify the land acquired for the SYL project and return it to the "original owners" at no cost.
The Congress MLAs were not present in the house as they had resigned from the Assembly over the issue.
Punjab has been insisting that the SYL water sharing agreement with Haryana was based on 1920 data, while the latter has been saying that it has been deprived of its legitimate share of water.
