Swine flu horror in Gujarat: Death toll rises to 354

According to reports, a total of 354 people have died due to swine flu in Gujarat.

Gandhinagar, Sep 1: Gujarat's fight against the deadly epidemic, swine flu, continues as everyday a sizeable number of people are dying due to the disease.

On Thursday, five more deaths were reported due to swine flu in the state. At least 354 patients have died due to swine flu in Gujarat since the epidemic broke out in January, this year.

Along with the deaths, Gujarat also registered 174 new cases of swine flu on Thursday. According to the health bulletin issued by the state health department, five persons infected with the H1N1 virus have died in different parts of the state on Thursday.

While six persons had died on Wednesday, the number of new cases reported on the day was 133. As per figures available with the officials, a total of 3,874 swine flu patients have been cured till date, including 1,850 during the last one week.

A health official told reporters that currently 599 ventilators are available in different hospitals across the state to treat severely ill patients. This year, nine government laboratories have been authorised to conduct swine flu test for free of cost, he added.

Recently, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani visited civil hospitals in Surat, Rajkot, Vadodara and Ahmedabad to take stock of the swine flu situation.

During his visit to a hospital in Vadodara, Rupani said that he has requested the Centre to send a team of medical experts to suggest steps to prevent the spread of the H1N1 virus infection.
