Stray dogs culling: Boycott Kerala campaign gains momentum

Kozhikode, July 14: A global online campaign named 'Boycott Kerala Tourism to Save Animals' has gained momentum in the state. The campaign has called for a worldwide protest on Sunday, July 26.

The objective of the campaign is to protest against the Kerala government's decision to get rid off stray dogs.

The campaign is getting noticed widely these days with the usage of videos and photographs depicting roughshod killings of animals in different parts of the state.

According to the campaigners, its a faceless protest and calls for the boycott of Kerala tourism and all Kerala products till the Kerala dog culling orders are not revoked. The campaign has the support of Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisations (FIAPO).

The slogan of the campaign is, "God's own country is now dog's own hell"and a poster is being circulated widely through social networking platforms and it calls for a world-wide protest on July 26 in cities across the country.

The state government and the Tourism Ministry have been given two weeks to decide on the issue of mass culling of stray dogs, according to the sources. They also add that the decision will give a negative image about the nation and it will adversely affect the economy of the state as the campaign is targeting the tourism sector.

The campaigners have also asked people to sign a petition. They claim they have already got around 50,000 signs.

Last Thursday, Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy chaired an all-party meeting and confided local self-government institutions with the task.

The meeting has decided that existing laws and court orders were not against killing of stray dogs that have rabies or those that cause a threat to society.

Twitterati has also shown its concern over the issue. Here are some tweets:
