Sohrabuddin case: CBI is bound to protect witnesses says Bombay HC

The Central Bureau of Investigation has informed the Bombay High Court that none of the witnesses in the Sohrabuddin encounter case had come before it seeking protection.

The submission was made a day after the HC had pulled the CBI up for its inability to protect the witnesses. Justice Revati Mohite Dere had questioned the seriousness of the CBI in conducting the trial.

The court had taken note of the fact that almost 30 witnesses had turned hostile in the case. It observed that it was the duty of the CBI to protect the witness so that they could depose without feat.

The CBI said that it had not received any complaint about the threats to the witnesses. We are willing to provide protection to the witnesses if they come forward, the CBI also said.

The court, it may be recalled had said that the CBI cannot file a chargesheet and leave it at that. It is the duty of the agency to agency to protect the witnesses, the court had also observed.
