Similar weapon used in murder of Gauri Lankesh, Kalburgi similar: Ballistics

As of now the motive behind the murder of Gauri Lankesh is unclear.

The preliminary investigations being conducted into the murder of journalist Gauri Lankesh suggests that it had the same modus operandi was found in the M M Kalburgi case. While the CCTV footage is crucial to the probe, the ballistic report suggests a similar modus operandi.

The ballistic report suggests that it was fired from a similar pistol used in the murder of Kalburgi, Narendra Dabholkar and Govind Pansare. In all three cases it was found that a 7.65 mm pistol was used in murder. Preliminary investigations into the Gauri Lankesh murder also suggest that a similar weapon was used.

The CCTV footage also has given clues to the police. The police have been comparing the footage with the one obtained during the murder of Kalburgi. The police have got a fair idea and say that the killers look similar. However the CCTV footage will have to be sent for image enhancement following which a clearer picture would emerge, police officials also said.

While the Karnataka Government has formed a Special Investigation Team to probe the case, it would need to coordinate with its counterparts in Maharashtra who are probing the murders of Dabholkar and Pansare. All three murder cases remained unsolved till date. The main finding in the Kalburgi murder case remains the recovery of a weapon.

The CID said that a 7.65 mm pistol was used to kill Kalburgi. Further it was also found that it was the same weapon that was used to kill Pansare at Kolhapur on February 16 2015.

Further the analysis by the forensic analysis also suggested that one of the two guns used to shoot down Pansare in 2015 was used to kill Dabholkar at Pune on August 20 2013.

As of now the motive behind the murder of Gauri Lankesh is unclear. The police say that while there appear to be similarities, it would be too early to pass any comment.
