The #ShutDownJNU trended on Twitter for the second day in a row on Thursday (February 11).
The recent controversy at the prestigious institute started after some left wing activists called a meet to commemorate Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru's death anniversary on Tuesday (February 9).
The rival right wing students' group, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), strongly condemned the event on the campus.
Thereafter, the situation turned violent and police were later deployed on the campus to restore order.
According to media reports, slogans like "Kashmir ki azadi tak jung chalegi, Bharat ki barbadi tak jung chalegi" were reportedly raised by the left wing activists of JNU.
Now, the university administration has ordered an inquiry into the whole incident.
"The permission for the programme was sought by giving incomplete information. So it is an act of indiscipline. A committee headed by the chief proctor will examine the footage of the event and speak to the witnesses. On the basis of the report, the varsity will take appropriate action," M Jagdesh Kumar, JNU vice-chancellor, told media.
The registrar of the varsity, Bupinder Zutshi, said, "It was nowhere mentioned in the permission request that the event will be on Afzal Guru. The organisers said that they wanted to organise a cultural event. How can any talk about disintegration of nation be in national interest?"
Tweeting about the whole incident, playback singer Abhijeet, who is known as a BJP symapthiser, wrote, "U organise a Shaheed Diwas at #JNU I wl do d concert, Left wings Ke Right kaan Ke neeche hum bajayenge, Wada Raha."
Most of the tweets pertaining to #ShutDownJNU were vitriolic in nature and strongly condemned the meet organized to commemorate Afzal Guru's death anniversary.
"#ShutDownJNU.@narendramodi Events happening in JNU & many other Institutions are dangerous&if not nipped in the bud, will go out of control," tweeted. Lt Gen Sampath Kumar (@LtGen_SampathK).
