Shocking: Indore's Government hospital shells out whopping Rs 55 lakh to get rid of rats

Nearly 2500 rats were recovered from one of the biggest government hospitals in Madhya Pradesh by a pest-control team.
Indore, Nov 6: Nearly 2500 rats were recovered from one of the biggest government hospitals in Madhya Pradesh by a pest-control team.

Men in masks with gloved hands were involved for the past two days in the Maharaja Yeshwantrao hospital in Indore. And at the end of two days they recovered a bucket load of dead rats which surprisingly outnumbered the total number of patients in the hospital.

As per reports nearly, nearly 1,000 people visit the hospital's Out Patient Department daily, and around 400 patients are currently admitted in the hospital.

As per an NDTV report, "officials say there are about 10,000 rat-holes in the hospital, each hiding between four and 14 rats. The numbers, they say, add up to a horrifying 70,000 rodents at this government-run hospital.

After years of ignoring the problem, the hospital has finally enlisted the help of a pest control company for a steep Rs. 55 lakh."

"20 years ago, we took six lakhs from the government for this task. That comes to 78 lakhs today. We are spending Rs. 1.8 lakh on just the bait. We have put 40 men on the job for a month. We are using expensive equipment, poison and the area that we are searching is 10 acres," said Dr Sanjay G Karmakar was quoted as saying in the report.

This condition of a hospital which is one of the largest in Indore, raises many questions. Patients will also think twice before coming to the hospital after seeing this condition.

The operation to search and kill the rats has been named "Operation Kaya-Kalp (Makeover)" and could runs into several weeks to get rid of all the rodents in the hospital.
