Shhh..Twitter is Bangalore police informer now
Yes, the Bangalore police is depending on 'Tweets' for criminal intelligence. According to a report in Indian Express, the State police is tapping the potential of social platform in providing tip-offs regarding different crimes like policemen demanding bribes, eve-teasing. The State police is trying to get in touch with Tweetformants who can post Twitter messages about crimes that come to their notice.
The report said the State police Commissioner M N Reddi has directed all his immediate sub-ordinates to have an account on all social media sites including Twitter so that they could easily interact with the public and receive the complaints.
According to report, the Bangalore police attribute the growing number of ‘Tweet-in-formants' to its promise that the identity of persons reporting crimes will be kept secret.
"Anyone tweeting online about a crime is taken with utmost seriousness and reported to local officers who have to file a FIR, " the joint commissioner of police was quoted as saying in the report.
The police said it has recently detained six persons on charges of eve-teasing and ganja peddling on the basis of a Twitter tip off. A shop owner was also booked after complaints on Twitter that he sells tobacco products to minors.
The police said so far the twitter tip-offs have been proved reliable and helped the police to tackle the issues.
