Mumbai gangrape case: Shakti mill accused lost and found
"He is very much in jail, he has not escaped," said Additional DG Prisons Thane.
Confusions brewed up when the accused was notproduced in court as the two departments of Maharashtra police argued over his custody. While the Thane jail authorities said that they did not have the custody of the accused, but the Crime Btanch.
The latter, however, denied the allegations. Now that he has been traced in the jail, the blame has been put on the manual entry of the convicts, which is a cumbursome task given the expanse and the population of the jail here.

Shiraj Ur Rehman was also alleged to be involved in other rape cases reported after the Mumbai gangrape case. His escape has come as a big blow to the efficiency of the Mumbai crime branch and the police.
However, Mumbai Crime Branch's claims that the accused is still present in Thane jail is giving rise to speculations as to why the crime branch would tarnish its own image unnecessarily. As per sources, a letter to the court by the jail authorities clearly mentioned that the accused is not in their custody.
