Mumbai, March 10: Finally, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma apologised over his 'sexist' remark on Women's Day on Friday.

"Whoever got offended by my tweets I didn't mean to be insensitive, living in this country I have freedom of speech, but in case someone was offended I apologise. But I do not apologise to those who threatened to take law in their hands," the director told India Today in an interview.

On the occasion of International Women's Day on Wednesday, Varma tweeted, "I wish all the women in the world give men as much happiness as Sunny Leone gives."

His tweet created a massive uproar on social media and several women's rights activists asked Varma to tender an apology. A Goa-based women's rights activist Vishakha Mhambrey filed a police complaint against the 54-year-old director for his inconsiderate tweet, which amounts to an offence under the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act.

Nationalist Congress Party leader Vidya Chavan on Thursday threatened to beat up Varma, who had posted sexist 'Women's Day' message on the Twitter, with shoes.

Meanwhile, Bollywood actress and former adult film star Sunny Leone, who was at the centre of the controversy, decided to speak on the entire fiasco. She posted a video on her Twitter handle, saying, "Hey everyone! I read all the news today and I believe that change only happens when we have one voice, so choose your words wisely."

"Change only happens when we have one voice, so let's choose your words wisely! Peace and love!!" Sunny captioned it.
