Security tightened up for Operation Blue Star anniversary

Amritsar, June 4: The Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) and Punjab police are cooperating with each other to ensure that the 31st anniversary of Operation Blue SBltar on June 6 passes off smoothly.

The authorities are concerned about the law and order situation after a bandh was called in Amritsar by radical Sikh outfit Dal Khalsa.


The SGPC is considering various measures, including restricting weapons inside the Golden Temple complex, except the ceremonial kirpan.

Around 12,000 police personnel from Amritsar police commissionerate and 1,000 more personnel from other districts have been deployed to maintain the law and order. The personnel have been deployed near the Hall Gate and the Golden Temple.

The police have warned againt forcibly shutting shops and other establishments in the city.

The SGPC has also decided to deploy its own task force to help the administration maintain normalcy.

The Dal Khalsa will also undertake a parade on Friday to mark the occasion. It said that the pain of the attack is still fresh.

Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurubachan Singh appealed to all sections to maintain peace on the occasion. Only the jathedar will be allowed to address the gathering. The SGPC has also banned carrying of public address systems into the shrine on the day.
